Mint Hill: A Great Place to Start and Grow Your Small Business

High commercial rents in Charlotte’s most popular areas, like SouthPark, South End, Dilworth and Ballantyne, are often just too expensive for small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs. Even if you manage to afford the rent, there is not much left over to hire more employees, reinvest in the business or enjoy as profit. But there’s another story going on in Mint Hill, the up-and-coming suburb to the southeast of Charlotte.

Small Town Charm Attracts New Residents

For years, Mint Hill was a sleepy suburb of Charlotte. It’s main strip — Matthews-Mint Hill Road, aka Highway 51, between Lawyers Road and Highway 218 — was mostly residential, with a few commercial properties dotted throughout, such as the old Town Hall; the local feed store, Woof ‘n Hoof; and even a former textile mill.

Today, Mint Hill’s downtown business district still exudes its small town charm while enjoying a burst of commercial development, driven by surrounding residential growth. The Woof ‘n Hoof; the living history museum, the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village; and other long-time Mint Hill mainstays now coexist alongside the new Town Hall and other recent projects, like the Shoppes at Mint Hill.

Former Textile Mill Now Home to Small Businesses

One of the remnants of Mint Hill’s past that is still standing is the former Kings Craft Hosiery Mill. Built in 1945 and located in the center of downtown, for over 45 years it provided factory jobs to Mint Hill residents.

Today, the building, now known as The Lofts at 7714, continues as an economic generator. It has been retrofitted from its past industrial usage into 10 distinct commercial spaces, currently being used by local small business owners for retail, office, educational and studio space.
